EL ECO

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 7:00pm

The updated jazz-Brazilian mix EL ECO delivers is driven by leader and composer Guillermo Nojechowicz, whose original tunes fill their sets, with a few gorgeously covered standards thrown in for good measure. The sextet combines the warm and lustrous sounds of samba and candombe with the tighter lines of bebop and straight-ahead jazz, darkened by echoes of Piazolla. A drummer, Nojechowicz writes from the beat, delivering a complex mix of Cuban, Afro-Cuban, Bossa Nova, and Funk rhythms.

Daby Toure (Mauritania) & Extra Golden (Kenya)

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 7:30pm

‘Touré's music evokes modern and traditional modes of life. It's as influenced by the sounds coming out of today's Senegal, Mali, Paris and New York as it is flavored by the traditional music of his native Mauritania’. (Billboard)

Extra Golden open with their unique blend of Kenyan Benga music, American Rock and other, assorted African guitar stylings. What started out as a whim, a crazy “what if…” scenario between friends, has steadily grown into a fully-realized, musical dynamo met with widespread critical praise.
