WICN's Fall Brown Bag Concert Series

Wednesday the 10th at 1pm

Come experience the sights and sounds of the WICN Public Radio and Mechanics Hall Brown Bag Concert Series. Yound and upcoming artists as well as favorite jazz natives will perform at these free concerts. Each show starts at noon and is broadcast live on WICN at 90.5 FM and heard around the world on the web at wicn.org. Everyone is welcome to bring his or her own lunch or purchase one at the hall, prepared by La Patisserie Café. This series is now in it's twenty-second year and is sponsored by Bank of American. Below is the schedule for the months of November and December 2008.

  • November 12 – Aaron Weinstein: Named a ‘rising star violinist’ by Downbeat Magazine, Aaron Weinstein is earning a reputation as one of the finest jazz violinists of his generation. Performing as a soloist, or in collaboration, Aaron has, in the words of Wall Street Journal writer Nat Hentoff, created a “rebirth of the hot jazz violin”. Performing with Aaron at Mechanics Hall will be Jon Wheatley on guitar and Marshall Wood on bass.
  • November 19 – Krisanthi Pappas: Jazz, cabaret and pop vocalist, Krisanthi Pappas, has the vocal gentleness of Norah Jones, the husky-voiced passion of Bonnie Raitt and the swinging playfulness of Ella Fitzgerald. Based in the Boston-area, Krisanthi is a full-time entertainer playing an average of 150 performances a year at jazz concert series, festivals, resorts, clubs and private events throughout New England and New York City.
  • November 26: Sunny and Her Joy Boys featuring Duke Robillard and Billy Novick: A project and collaboration that has been waiting for the right vocalist, Sunny and Her Joy Boys celebrate the rich era of the jazz female stylist. Native Duke Robillard and Billy Novick will be joined by the vocal accompaniment of Sunny Crownover. Sunny and Her Joy Boys are bound to make you feel happy with a blend of soft yet powerful rhythm, reminiscent of 30’s jazz.
  • December 3 - Jack Donahue: As Rex Reed of the New York Observer says, “Surrender to Jack Donahue – he will haunt you…fresh and captivating…astoundingly imaginative.” Hailed by critics and loved by audiences across the country, Jack Donahue is a rare talent. With a voice that will keep away the upcoming winter chill, Jack will be performing for the first December Brown Bag.
  • December 10 - U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty: Our annual holiday concert…this program is always well attended, so please plan to come early. (Theater seating for this concert.)The United States Air Force Band of Liberty is stationed at Hanscom AFB near Boston, Massachusetts; this group of 60 musicians has been entertaining audiences throughout the New England region and beyond since 1978!

Avi & Celia have become a strong part of the music scene, helping to invigorate the community with the essence of yesteryear. Both 23-year-old native New Englanders, Avi & Celia are writing conscious material bound together with tight harmonies and the spirit of a musical revival.

Annie Lynch & the Beekepers are an acoustic alternative folk group of artists from a variety of music backgrounds. While the songs performed by the quartet originated as Annie's folk tunes, the music has evolved and expanded with rich band arrangements.
