April Hall

April, a Florida native, has roots steeped in southern tradition, music and culture. Her deep roots in southern gospel and blues combine with urban soulfulness and sophistication, to create music that’s pure, gutsy, and unmistakably authentic. April’s voice is an instrument of astonishing beauty and versatility, capable of ranging from the subtlest nuance to the most powerful soul-drenched belting with equal ease and mastery. But her focus is always on singing the song, in the tradition of classic singers like Joe Williams, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Tony Bennett.

Gilfema + 2 = Live Performance!

Although their geographical roots are spread out on the map, one listen to Gilfema leaves the distinct impression that guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke (from Benin, West Africa), Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth, and Swedish-Italian bassist Massimo Biolcati were destined to find one another. Gilfema has released just two albums -- the group's self-titled 2005 debut and now their new 2008 release Gilfema + 2, featuring the trio plus guest clarinetists Anat Cohen and John Ellis -- yet their recordings project a sense of intuitiveness in their interactions that more commonly result from decades of playing together. The band returns for a live performance and interview, along with John Ellis from the new album, as well as clarinetist Joris Roelof, ahead of their appearance this evening at the Regattabar.

Pyeng Threadgill - Live Performance!

On her soon to be released third album, Portholes To A Love & Other Short Stories, Pyeng Threadgill explores concepts of reality and magic, humanity and nature. With Pyeng's vibrant, caressing vocals and her band's rolling rhythms and revolving countermelodies listeners are enveloped in the clouds and put under a spell. From the lulling sensation of locomotion, to the secrets of the sea, the hopeless romantic, to the immigrant experience Pyeng uses lyrics lush in metaphor to depict a wondrous universe.
