Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem are a steadily deepening, 12-year brew of band chemistry, life experience and musical evolution. In 2007, the San Francisco Guardian called them “one of the most song- and arrangement-oriented bands in a field overgrown with pyrotechnic, jam- and solo-conscious virtuosos.” Nice. And true. But what really sets this band apart is their connection — to each other, to the audience, and to the music. Simultaneously loose and tight, their playing seems to tick by invisible radar; it’s exciting, cathartic, and fun to watch. It’s a band.

Ever since Steve Earle declared Miller a "world class" songwriter - signing him and his former band The V-Roys to his record label E-Squared and producing their two bedrock Americana albums Just Add Ice and All About- Miller has been known as a writer's writer. Even on the next four albums Miller recorded and released on Sugar Hill Records, Miller's songwriting remained genuinely thoughtful, for the most part regional and history based-- but always cloaked in what one New York Times reviewer called an "epic vernacular." In other words, he wrote big.
Tev Stevig explores the potential of playing the fretless nylon string guitar clawhammer style on his new recording Jeni Jol ("New Path" in Macedonian). Clawhammer, or frailing, is an old African technique typically associated with old time American folk banjo, but Stevig uses this uniquely American playing style on the fretless and fretted guitar to arrive at new arrangements of his favorite tunes from the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey, as well as his Balkan-inspired original material.
What is a story slam? Based on a poetry slam format and similar to American Idol, a story slam is a contest of words by known and undiscovered talent. massmouth posts a theme on it's website (www.massmouth.ning.com) and story slammers will sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute short story on the evening's theme and a lucky eight to ten names will be drawn at random from a box. Other audience members may feel moved to join in on a judging team.
The Expedition Quintet with Jake Schepps has a new album of music by the great Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. While the group is rooted in the stringband tradition, the result is music—and music-making—that is as fresh and exciting to our 21st-century ears as it must have been to Bartók’s first listeners so many decades ago. The EQ have all deeply studied folk music, spending years jamming in festival campgrounds and old-time fiddle gatherings, and they bring that element of musicianship and prowess to all genres.
David Dondero is an American songwriter, guitarist, former lead singer of the band Sunbrain. In 2006, NPR's All Songs Considered named David one of the "best living songwriters" alongside Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Tom Waits. Dondero started his musical career on drums at the age of 10, due in part to the fact that he "was always drumming on stuff with my hands". Dondero released four records with the Clemson, SC-based punk/hardcore band Sunbrain (three on Grass Records and one on Ghostmeat Records), before breaking up in 1995.
Women of the World is an international world music ensemble currently based in Boston. What started out as a dream four years ago, has become a real musical force. Ayumi Ueda, a Berklee College of Music alumnus from Japan, sought to create an ensemble of women from all over the world to create music for peace. In 2008, Ayumi joined forces with like-minded musicians, Giorgia Renosto from Italy, Annette Philip from India, and Débòrah Pierre from USA/Haiti in order to manifest this vision.
