Saxophonist Joe Lovano, one of the foremost improvisers in jazz today, propels his double-drummer quintet – Us Five – into a polyrhythmic conversation and weaves inspired solos from the Allen Room. Us Five features Joe Lovano (saxophone), GRAMMY® winner Esperanza Spalding (bass), James Weldon (piano), Peter Slavov (bass), Otis Brown III (drums), and Francisco Mela (drums), plus special guests Lionel Loueke (guitar) and Judi Silvano (vocals).

musAner is a 10-person ensemble blending jazz orchestration and Armenian folk music. Founded in 2007 by composer and pianist Ara Sarkissian, the group released its first recording in 2009.

Featuring a wide array of musicians from the Boston music scene, the group has presented widely in both jazz circles and general audiences. In addition to the acclaim it has received from audiences and critics in the Boston area, the group has performed to sold-out audiences Italy, Switzerland and New York City.

Talk Listen Door and Sun Young

An evening of songs and improvised songsTalk Listen Door is a quintet of local Boston musicians that is crossing genre boundaries and taking risks to find themselves in song. 

Playing with influences that range from jazz to post-rock to improvised music, the band crafts original songs that percolate, rumble, and swell with sonic energy.

The band released their debut EP, TALK LISTEN DOOR, in March 2013.

Ben van Gelder

Despite his age, Ben van Gelder (24) is an important new voice on New York’s groundbreaking improvised music scene. Peers and critics alike praise him for his unique sound and originality as a composer and improviser.
This concert will mark Ben van Gelder’s first concert as a leader at the Lily Pad. For the occasion he has decided on a chordless formation featuring some of New York’s most forward thinking musicians.

Brett Walberg Group

Brett Walberg Group will be participating in a monthly residency.

September is focused on the exploration both contextually and sonically, the music from their upcoming record “Heartbeat Melodies”, where future months will be focusing on the expansion of the music through different forms and larger ensembles.

Septembers group will consist of Brett Walberg on saxophone, flute and bass Clarinet, Jeremy Quick on guitar, Alexei Tsaginov on piano, Frank Ojeda on bass,  Jungho Kang on drums and featured guest Jake Baldwin on trumpet.

Sirius Quartet (NYC)

The wildly adventurous Sirius Quartet will be bringing their explosive mix of composed and improvised sound back to the Lily Pad .

Forsaking the traditional model of the string quartet playing the music of other composers, Sirius Quartet will be playing their own compositions, which blur genre lines and include everything from minimalist polyrhythmic metal to lush post-classical melodies to explosive free jazz freakouts.
