Images of the hybrid creature called the griffin has been with us since at least 3500 BCE. Found on shields, on drinking vessels, in heraldry, and even in Harry Potter books, griffin lore has centered on their fierceness and love of gold. In this episode of Inquiry, we talk with A. L. McCLANAN. She is a Professor of Art History at Portland State University, Oregon. Her new book explores the many images of these part lion, part eagles: GRIFFINOLOGY: THE GRIFFIN’S PLACE IN MYTH, HISTORY AND ART.
