Bonnie Johnson Interviews T.S. Monk III

2020 has certainly been a year of memorable challenges, but it also marks the release of Impulse Records’ Monk: Palo Alto. The “unknown” recording was captured live in 1968, during the height of “American triumphs and tragedies.” A fifteen-year-old high school student named Danny Scher had been volunteering at the Monterey Jazz Festival when he was inspired to host a concert featuring the pianist Thelonious Monk.

Scher made the bold move of contacting Monk’s manager, who agreed to book the show. Colors of Jazz host Bonnie Johnson spoke with jazz drummer and philanthropist T.S. Monk III about his father’s historic performance at Palo Alto High School. Check it out:
