Athens, Georgia in the 1970s was a very unlikely place to expect an alternative culture that would begin a revolution in music. But bands like the B52s, R.E.M., Pylon and many others all called Athens home and got their start there. What was going on in Athens during that time? Tonight on Inquiry we talk with GRACE ELIZABETH HALE. She is the Commonwealth Professor of American Studies and History at the University of Virginia. Her new book chronicles the rise of bohemian culture of Athens: COOL TOWN: HOW ATHENS, GEORGIA, LAUNCHED ALTERNATIVE MUSIC AND CHANGED AMERICAN CULTURE.
