Frans Hals was one of Europe’s great portrait painters. His lively, loose, and expressive works painted in Haarlem in the 17th Century and were much in demand. Yet we know little about the specifics of his life despite his fame. On this episode of Inquiry, we talk with STEVEN NADLER. He is Vilas Research Professor, the William H. Hay Professor of Philosophy, and affiliate professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His new biography is THE PORTRAITIST: FRANS HALS AND HIS WORLD.
