In 1587, a number of English colonists disembarked at Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina, the fist European settlement in America. The ships sailed back to England. When they returned to Roanoke in 1590, there were no signs of the colonists. They had disappeared. Where they went and what happened to them has been the subject of speculations and investigations ever since. On this episode of Inquiry, we talk with ERIC KLINGELHOFER, emeritus professor of history at Mercer University. He is the Editor to a new book of research papers that review the latest scientific archaeological findings from different sites in the area: EXCAVATING THE LOST COLONY MYSTERY: THE MAP, THE SEARCH, THE DISCOVERY.
